The Alpine Club of Pakistan has strongly condemned the heinous and deplorable massacre of ten foreign mountaineers and one local kitchen staff at the 4,200m high Diamer Base Camp of Nanga Parbat (8,125 m).

Alpine Club of Pakistan, Islamabad, Pakistan) The Alpine Club of Pakistan has strongly condemned the heinous and deplorable massacre of ten foreign mountaineers and one local kitchen staff at the 4,200m high Diamer Base Camp of Nanga Parbat (8,125 m).

In the early hours of Sunday [June 23] Alpine Club member and a trekking guide, Mr Sawal Faqir of Diamer, reported this sad and shocking incident to ACP officials, who immediately informed the concerned officials at Ministry of Kashmir Affairs and Gilgit Baltistan at Islamabad and Govt of Gilgit Baltistan at Gilgit. At the same time through other sources renowned mountaineer, Nazir Sabir, was able to inform the Force Commander Northern Areas,who took immediate action and flew to the said Base Camp early in the morning on Sunday 23rd June.

It is mentioned that Diamer face Base Camp, which is located in District Diamer, is only accessible from Gunar Farm on Karakoram Highway, 25 km from Chilas, towards Gilgit. The Diamer Base Camp is about 40 km from Gunar Farm, which is covered in two to three days due to difference in height. It should not be misunderstood with Fairy Meadows, as has been reported by different media.

According to the report on Saturday, June 22nd at about 11 pm, about 15 persons wearing Gilgit Scouts uniform and masked, attacked the Base Camp. First they took away all available mobiles and Thuraya satellite telephones forcefully and beat many mountaineers.

Then they looted all those present in the camp and before leaving shot dead those in sight. Few mountaineers and guides managed to run away to higher location and towards Camp1. Mr Sawal Faqir also managed to stay alive and used his Thuraya Satellite phone, which was hidden from the attackers and managed to inform about the incident. The foreign nationalities include Chinese, Nepalese, Russian and Ukrainians.

Earlier President ACP, as well as Mr Abu Zafar Sadiq Secretary ACP, phoned officials of the China Mountaineering Association at Beijing, People’s Republic of China, and conveyed their heartfelt condolence on the sad killing of two Chinese mountaineers, namely Mr. Yang Chunfeng and Mr. Rao Jianfeng, during the incident. They assured the Chinese officials that Government of Pakistan is taking full care of the survivor Mr. Zhang Jingchuan for his safe return back home and transportation of bodies of the killed Chinese mountaineers.
